    Whiteface Conditions

Glad it stayed snow up high yesterday. Fingers crossed for the weekend, although it’s looking dicey. For the mountain proper it doesn’t really matter. A mix still builds base and the slopes will recover. A crusty mess would, however, likely set a promising Slides season back a bit…..

    Winter Weather 2024/25

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, as they say. Weekend storm seems to be shifting north and west, with mixed precipitation back in the picture for the dacks. Until tomorrow….??????

    Whiteface Conditions

Soooo…..any reports from yesterday? Don’t like today’s conditions report regarding ‘fast and firm as a result of the bout with mixed precipitation’. How bad did that get, and at what elevations?

    Winter Weather 2024/25

ECMWF seems to be coming in line with GFS and Canadian solutions for Saturday night thru Sunday. Forecast Discussion talking about 15:1 to 18:1 snow to liquid ratios, in places. Cats still look to get skunked, although OpenSnow still has an optimistic 10-20 inch forecast for Platty, at the...

    Winter Weather 2024/25

Used to be Marconi mostly, until the new stairs they built in the spring washed away in the fall and beach access was limited. Since then Nauset Light mostly, but over New Years it seems Coast Guard has become a hotter spot? Shifting sands and all…

    Winter Weather 2024/25

Keeping it winter weather related…..Friday looks very windy on Cape, and not in a good offshore kind of way. Sunday looks windy/snowy/rainy/big surf, so terrible. Sat and Mon do have some potential, so at least I’ll get the board to the beach and get wet if it’s remotely worthwhile. My winter...

    Winter Weather 2024/25

I hope WF opens the Slides today and somebody get to enjoy it before Ma Nature fouls it up! Not that it matters for me because I’ll be on Cape Cod surfing and not skiing anywhere…but forecasts for the ADKs haven’t yet all given up on the Sat - Sun storm being all snow, but the tea leaves are there.

    Winter Weather 2024/25

Ummm…I looked back 36 hrs and what do I see from our resident expert? NADA! :p:cool: I did get a little nervous with the possibility of freezing drizzle making its way into the forecast yesterday, but didn’t think this thing was gonna shiite the bad as it did! Oh well. Still had fun at...

    Plattekill Conditions

Big time swing and a miss on the storm last night! Not the powder day hoped for…..or maybe I just never found the “awesome” 5-6” of new snow showing on the conditions report ….but it was a’ight. They groomed a bunch this morning and those trails were great this am, and the inch or two...

    Winter Weather 2024/25

Yeah yeah. Warm air always wins….womp, womp. Is there ANY scenario where Thursdays storm at WF produces more snow than frz rn/sleet at elevation??

    ELAN 96 RIPSTICKS for sale

Glad both that you sold them, and that the drama is over, maybe? Begs the question…did you sell them to a patroller? :p BTW, the Ripstick 96 is a great ski! Been skiing on Blacks (with Shifts) for a while, and after tying them my brother and son are both on Ripstick 96 setups.

For those who haven’t seen, snow report says Skyward opening tomorrow. Expect it ungroomed for a couple of days. Embrace the whales! See y’all Saturday.

    Wild Ice

Jealous. I miss the days when the pond next to our house had ice. Decade ago drought emptied it, growth took over. While the water is back it’s too overgrown for open ice. Miss those days! Maybe some day we’ll make efforts to regain a patch of ice. Have fun!

    Whiteface Conditions

As always, Face know his stuff. As to WF for MLK/Chevy weekend……past performance is no guarantee of future results, but “crowded” holiday weekends are generally not that crowded, at least not by VT standards. We’ve done the MLK/Chevy weekend several times. Sure, the gondola will get crowded in...

    Avalanche

For sure. Usually in May you aren’t dealing with deep new snow, potentially poor bonding, and wind slab. Spring risks are always there with warming and whatnot, but risks can often be mitigated with proper timing and avoiding south facing slopes. Dealing with midwinter avy conditions in May...

    Avalanche

It’s been winter conditions up there this week I believe. The incident was in the Big Willow Cirque area. It’s at least a three hour tour just to get there, longer to make the summit of Lone. Some reports say it took the party that got caught in the avy five hours to get in. It’s a remote...
