Where are you skiing this week?

My van heater sips from my gas tank, other people’s run off of diesel. Agree that they are probably trying to keep a dog or wife warm all day.

Where are you skiing this week?

Listen, I’m not one to judge (because I bought a van to sleep in), but I don’t understand how you could pay $80,000 for a truck & then decide that it’s better to sleep in that than in a $100/night hotel room that has a shower & a toilet.

Poll: What changes would you like to see at your home mountain?

Another vote for the Gondola that goes from North Creek->Ski Bowl->Burnt Ridge Base->Base Lodge?

Poll: The Impact of the Epic Pass

I think this is a perfectly reasonable response to a guy with this stated objective (even one that is knowledgeable about ski areas). If sno (or anyone) wanted to get the maximum ski time, combined with the minimum wait time, it’s the most obvious option. “Is it okay if that ski time is at...

Poll: The Impact of the Epic Pass

Why? Midweek skiing is good for everyone. I look forward to taking a couple of nice midweek days this spring (with the kid in daycare).

Poll: The Impact of the Epic Pass

Okay, I didn’t realize the [pet peeve] you had for [people who suggest midweek skiing like I never thought of it before]. It seemed to go beyond that, though. Were you speaking to “people who suggest midweek skiing like I never thought of it before” when you said the “ski midweek” stuff is...

Poll: The Impact of the Epic Pass

I didn’t realize the simmering hatred you had for midweek skiers until these last few posts of yours. As a weekend skier, I aspire to be a midweek skier someday. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. It’s kind of crazy how much of our entire economy is based on giving retired people...

Lift Throughput: Why it Matters and How to Improve it

Everyone has their own thing. I’m sure some of the things that bring you joy might be completely boring and tedious to someone else. That being said, there’s absolutely no way I’m reading his thoughts on this topic because those posts are long as hell & I can think of a million things that I’d...

Lift Throughput: Why it Matters and How to Improve it

I’m gonna go ahead and say indoor plumbing is good and your great-grandmother was wrong in this instance.

    Winter Weather 22/23

Also, if something is 60% likely, then 40% of the time it will go the other way. Lots of uncertainty to make judgments as to whether it’s gonna rain or snow in the coming 8-14 days.

    Winter Weather 22/23

In an area with winter normal temps near freezing (eastern US), sure. In an area with colder temperatures, there are definitely snow events with “brown” coloring. Also, just because that map has a lot of blue in the summer, it doesn’t mean snow. I just want people to know that It’s not a snow...

    Winter Weather 22/23

Should remind people that it’s not really an absolute temperature map (red=above freezing, blue=below), it’s just a map of temps relative to normal. We’d have to know the normal temps to discern whether a specific area would get snow/rain in the coming days (and I don’t know if I trust 8-14 day...

    ORDA's Biggest Mistakes

Daks are new mountains made of old rock. Uplift started happening 10-20 million years ago, making the mountains younger than the Appalachians (even though the rocks are older… from the Grenville Orogeny, I believe, which predates the Appalachian mountain building events). And yes, they are...

    Winter Weather 22/23

It’d be great, but there needs to be some snow leftover for base. I think that a lot of mountains will be unable/unwilling to make much more snow this year, so it’s all up to the snow gods. The next two weeks will be big. The bigger mountains seem like they’ll get through okay, but the smaller...

    Skiing's Future

Wow, one data point (total snowfall)? What about my points (higher temps in between snowfall events, less favorable windows for snowmaking, rain events after snowfall events, etc.). A winter isn’t measured by the “how much snow did Albany, NY receive?” metric
