Central Railroad of NJ Terminal: Jersey City - 08/26/24

Thanks! This link on their site is really informative. The diner is a half hour west of me so I'll have to make a point of eating in the coach car -- full bar too! Glad that they saved it from being scrapped. Not being from this region originally, I had no clue about the Blue Comet until that...

Central Railroad of NJ Terminal: Jersey City - 08/26/24

Following my successful pilgrimage to vintage pinball heaven a few weeks ago, the past week's fare holiday on all New Jersey Transit trains, light rail, and buses provided a good reason to go on another geek excursion that I'd put off for way too long: the defunct but preserved train terminal in...

Silverball Arcade: Asbury Park NJ, 08/09/24

No question. This machine, Gottlieb's 1971 Home Run, was my favorite growing up. I could've probably bought a used car with all the quarters I spent playing it at our local CNY hockey rink, Shove Park in Camillus. One of the comments notes that on the back glass is Ron Santo (bottom left), Ernie...

It had all of them -- things I hadn't seen in 40 years, including Stargate and Defender. The latter was the only digital game I played there. The arcade also had the Defender pinball game; however, as noted in the bio below, pinball was fading in relevance by the early/mid-80s.

Silverball Arcade: Asbury Park NJ, 08/09/24

With heavy rain the previous three days and more in the short-term forecast, I chose a pretty lousy week to take my first vacation from work in six months. Instead of the multiple golf and mountain bike outings that I had planned, I spent a lot of it at home catching up on household chores...

Seriously? I just got back from 1,800 feet in the Poconos; it was a steam bath.

Great piece, Brownski. I had zero recollection of reading it eight years ago; however, there was my comment mentioning Onondaga Lake so I apparently did! Just reading it makes me angry all over again -- how can people do that to a beautiful spot?

Dickey is a huge part of my musical life. Saw him twice with Dangerous Dan Toler in the clip above: 1979 (SPAC) and 1981 (Utica Auditorium).

The Sand Trap: for Players, Hackers and Duffers

You can tell that I haven't lived in Camillus in four decades -- I wasn't aware that there's a Camillus Grill Open. One of my high school classmates was the son of owner Hank Kulick.

The Sand Trap: for Players, Hackers and Duffers

@tirolski: I saw that voters approved the WG district's purchase of Westvale Golf Course a few months ago. Most of the layout is boilerplate parallel fairways; however, I liked the holes that went through the woods (13 - 16). Still, it was a cheap, convenient place to sneak in a round.

Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

A great aunt of mine used to have a cabin there. Even though it was only 20 minutes from our house, I don't think I've been to Cross Lake in 50 years. That's a great creepy pic! Looks like Dr. E. Nick Witty's humble mansion might be close by!

    Gore Mountain Conditions

Growing up in CNY, my mother always told us NEVER to pick even one trillium flower because it would kill an entire patch --claimed it was illegal. Apparently, she was right! https://www.lifeinthefingerlakes.com/trillium-tales/

Total Solar Eclipse coming to NY: April 8, 2024

In case @TonyC thinks that NEers in general are averse to extreme eclipse chasing ("the NYSB ethos"), my younger brother and his GF ate their hotel reservations (two nights west of Rochester), are driving up I-91 to northern VT right now, and may detour east into Maine depending on the...
