The Sand Trap: for Players, Hackers and Duffers

Agreed, to each his own unless you're playing competitively. My father and his CNY golf buddies had the asterisk, which was used if: a) you have a match-play bet and are only keeping track of strokes for posterity. b) you completely blow up a hole and are taking the max triple bogey. Thus, for a...

The Sand Trap: for Players, Hackers and Duffers

Hah, I noticed that too and did a search to make sure I hadn't been doing it wrong for 45 years. This site appears accurate. I wasn't aware of two squares for a double bogey. Given how I get a handful of those every round, I guess I should've known that!

The Sand Trap: for Players, Hackers and Duffers

Thanks for the heads-up. The pix look nice; I wish I'd known about it earlier! Only 15 minutes from Binghamton, I could've stopped there for a round on the way to/from CNY all those years.

The Sand Trap: for Players, Hackers and Duffers

Great Bear is on my to-do list for next season. Maybe I'll stay overnight at Shawnee and play them both. Nice round! I wish I could score in the 70s but that ain't gonna happen, kinda like skiing legit double-blacks. Is that ^^ with your wife? C'mon dude, for recreational golf you shouldn't...

The Sand Trap: for Players, Hackers and Duffers

I was joking. It's one of the private courses that I always wanted to play but never had the opportunity, along with Skaneateles, Cortland, Bellevue, and Onondaga. Courses I played the most over the years were the close-by public ones: Camillus, Westvale, West Hill, Foxfire, and in recent...

The Sand Trap: for Players, Hackers and Duffers

On Howlett Hill? I grew up exactly one mile from there (Pioneer Farms in Camillus). Never played Tuscarora; it was for rich people! I read that Westvale Golf Course is going to be bought by West Genesee, razed, and turned into land for the high school. Sad, I played a lot of rounds there.

The Sand Trap: for Players, Hackers and Duffers

With a final outing at my home course this morning, I'm done for the 2023 season. 31 rounds spread across northern NJ, the Poconos, and the Front Range of Colorado.

Sorry if I missed it earlier in the thread -- is that thing like an electric chair for mice?

So much for that. 4-5 and ninth in the Pac-12! 😁

Ugh indeed. You didn't mention it so I assume that there were no security cameras in the parking lot.

    The Mouse Thread

I'm joining late -- we have a mouse for the first time in 21 years at our house. Our cat is aware of it and in full stalking mode. He always brings back mice, birds, and baby rabbits to our front door during the warm months but this is a new experience for him, an indoor target. He sits...

Shawnee Golf Resort, PA: 10/27/23 (golf)

You mean a course that takes up the entire island? I haven't done a Google search to find out if there are others like that; however, I suspect that there aren't many!

    88. One birdie, five pars, and the rest was a hot mess. My excuse was that I was distracted by the foliage and landscape.

Thanks, much appreciated. Similar to skiing at obscure areas, my interest in documenting a day at oddball and/or historical golf courses vastly outweighs my actual skill at the game!

Shawnee Golf Resort, PA: 10/27/23 (golf)

With the end of our gorgeous late-October weather cycle in sight, I wanted to get in one more golf day with peak foliage in the Poconos and headed west on I-80 to a club less than two miles from the Delaware Water Gap that I've had my eye on for a while. Completed in 1911, Shawnee Golf Resort...

The Poconos Club: East Stroudsburg PA - 10/21/23 (golf)

Similar to spring skiing -- when crowds diminish, the weather is a lot more pleasant, and lift tickets become less expensive -- golf has a similar setup once we hit mid-September. I always take the opportunity to go a bit further afield than my usual golf haunts (municipal courses in Essex...
