HVAC: What's best for cold climates?

Fill it in with more ground. If your builder has equipment still on site maybe hit it now pretty aggressively. Not sure if you still have a frost line. This brought back a crazy memory. I did a two story addition on a home. The exterior was completed and all that remained was backfilling. My...

HVAC: What's best for cold climates?

New construction it’s a good idea because nobody compacts the soil when they backfill. The downside to wall brackets is the compressor noise transfers into the house. As quiet as mini splits are there’s still some noise. I give the customer the option, by the time I get there the ground has settled.

HVAC: What's best for cold climates?

Wind ? The fan blows across the outdoor coil to facilitate energy transfer. So wind should help performance. Some units have quirks. I had a dual unit that would blow cooler air from 20-40° . The homeowner was an engineer and had all kinds of temperature data and what he said was 100% correct...

Or a loose screw, put your hand on different places when it’s running. It doesn’t take much vibration to make lots of noise.

HVAC: What's best for cold climates?

The ground close to the house won’t freeze but a few feet further will . Also when they defrost the water drains into the ground around the pad. Re level it in spring, It’s good to have several inches of gravel so the water can drain.

    Now and Then

I knew about the ski area but not the railway. My uncle’s cousin lived in beacon and we stayed with them on a vacation maybe a few years after Duchess closed. I spotted the overgrown trails and wanted to do a hike but ran out of time.

    Now and Then

2021 - 1901 Today my wife came across a post card that someone posted from the Switcback railway in Jim Thorpe Pa. The snowboarders beat me to it that day.

    Bar up or down?

I hear that BS all the time, the irony is I broke my thumb ACL after going to a different type, a style that had a “cap” on top. Been back using the old ones since. The current ones don’t trap my thumb as it easily slides out. Two of my long time group still use them. When you break a pole...

    Bar up or down?

Arm over the back and other one goes around the post and sit on the poles . I love my old Scott breakaway grips, they hang on the bar nicely. Another reason I use the bar.

    Bar up or down?

Junior high ski trip in the 70’s. I got on a double with a fellow classmate who convinced me to leave the bar up. We were at the high point 60’? Lift slammed to a halt and rolled back 100’ and slammed to a halt again. Now we’re 45° tilting backwards. I cussed him out and said this is the reason...

    Wildlife

Steak and Shake-down. I was in Fl last week for a family vacation and tried a new fast food place that I hadn’t been to . The food was ok , afterwards we’re walking back to our car and noticed an Egret hitching a ride on the back of a pickup in the drive through, funny enough on its own. He hops...
