    Development Proposal in Jay NY

I can't imagine this can ever succeed. From the map it looks like they want to develop all that land on the shore of the Ausable above upper Jay. One good hundred year flood would take it all out pretty quickly...that and the environmentalists will keep it tied up in courts for years...decades

Hickory Ski Center Might Be Reopening

Ran into two folks today who said they were employees at Hickory. I asked currently? and they said "so they were told". Mother Nature is pissed at us but hopefully she dumps on Hickory this winter.

Storm Skiing Podcast with Vail Inc. Eastern Head Honcho

I wouldn't call Wildcat and Huntah feeder hills like Campgaw and Mt. Peter. Campgaw fed me to Huntah then I got smart and skied Plattekill, Highmount and Bobcat...perhaps feeder hills in their own right....but they were my main mountains growing up. Pre Vail Resorts, I would have loved to be a...

    What is your skiing history?

Totally agree. I think Mad River is the Best in the East after a dump. And whereas Jay has that Jay Cloud, MRG gets that secret crazy Lake Effect occasionally. We were up at MRG after a LE dump the year covid shut us down and there were a ton of Smuggs season ticket holders skiing MRG. They...

    What is your skiing history?

I started with my dad taking me to Campgaw when I was 11. He would drive as far as Big Vanilla, Mt. Cathalia, Holiday Valley, Sterling forest on weekends. When I had buddies that could drive we would go to Huntah. Remember HVI meatmarket of skidom. High school ski club went to Vernon Valley...

    The Vertical Drop Thread

I didn't go last year but lapping Chute on those days at MRG were magical...before last year, yes you could load the single at midstation...anyone on last year? Gotta figure way less people...arguably one of the best bump runs in the east

    Old Ski Runs

Just before I discovered Highmount and Plattekill, I skied Mt. Cathalia often. Great little mountain known for their steeps. When I was still living down that way, I would drive up just to see the lifts and trails (after they closed for good) but the garbage dumpng started to piss me off.

    SAD, but make it hot

I have SAD or whatever you want to call it. I really don't like summer. I will hike, kayak, bike, golf when I have time but pre Covid I would work be working every weekend at our Lake house. My wife called it fun. This year I decided to help out in the kitchen of a top restaurant in my area...

    That August Itch

Well...occasionally I will be on the 90eights...widest ski I have ever owned...My every day skis are AC 50s and I have 3+ a pair I might bring back to life. If they didn't have that issue with compatibility with bindings, they would be my uphill skis too.

    That August Itch

The tent sale at Alpine Sport Shop in Saratoga is traditionally my start to ski season. I stopped by on my way to work briefly on Thursday then went back with my daughter and her boyfriend Saturday. I always buy at lease one pair of ski poles but while my dauther was trying on boots I wandered...

    Catskill 4 Area Discussion

I had a day many moons ago when I got into the office when I was working in Albany. Signed in to my computer to an email saying the office was closed due to a snowstorm...I think Albany got 4". Then I got another email...From Platty 18" and still pounding...Powder Daize! I think it was a...

    Catskill 4 Area Discussion

I hope they can get Highmount online again. Growing up in N NJ, that was my go to. HVI days...loved Huntah during the week but Platte and Highmount were my go tos. Huntah was what Killington is to me now, early and late season. Bobcat was what Jiminy probably is...that extra 30 minutes...and...

Did you look at the webcam today? Seasonal depression starts now. Mtb, golf, hiking and kayak will work hard to get me to next season. :(

What I've learned since leaving Upstate New York

It has been a few years since I have been out there but it was an annual work trip that caused me to fall in love with the Bellingham Washington area. Would love to call Baker my home mountain with plenty of other options around. But alas, I will probably never leave upstate NY as my permanent...

    What is your skiing history?

I was 11 and asked my dad if I could ski. No Idea why but he said yes. He got some used equipment from a collegue and I took my first pair of K2 USA Holiday 185s to Campgaw NJ. I was hooked. He would sometimes take the 215 Heads he got to the bunny hill and sometimes just came back to get me...

    Coronavirus and Skiing

Back in the day I remembered " Welcome to Vermont Now Go Home" bumper stickers in the Wilmington area. They may still be there but I haven't. I skied Mad River for a dozen years for free thanks to my Vermont boss. I worked in Bennington for 5 and a few out of Rutland(used to get at least a...
