That's no excuse. They need to build out the system to cover the mountain they have, not the mountain as it was before all the expansions. If water or anything else is a limit that cannot be overcome, they should stop expanding. mm

I spoke to a Gore snowmaker at the Stewarts on Monday. He told me they were done Presidents Day. mm

Maybe they can draw a crowd with races on it, like a Zip Hole competition or something. Is Zip Coaster a WUG sport? mm

Isn't Belle inside the NYC watershed? The DEP probably has more water restrictions and more worse reporting requirements than either the DEC or APA. mm

So expand, then wait 10 years for snowmaking to catch up? Really? Maybe enjoy the zip coaster while you wait? mm

    Gore Mountain Conditions

I posted this in the Whiteface thread: That applies double to Gore. They're spending $$$$ on expansions (new longer Hudson chair, widening Arena, widening upper Cloud, Pete's Paradise, straightening Steilhang, Backwoods, boardercross courses) without enough snowmaking to open what they had...

    Whiteface Conditions

How hard do they push against that limit, and can they increase the limit? And why did they build Hoyts and Wilmington if they are water limited? Did they not expect the kind winters we have now? When was the last time Whiteface was 100% by Xmas week? mm

    Whiteface Conditions

I spoke to a Gore snowmaker at Stewarts Monday. He told Gore closed out snowmaking on Presidents Day. I think that's pretty typical, at least in NY. There's just not that many cold hours after mid-February. mm

I ski mostly at Gore, but Belleayre was better the days I skied them back to back. Belle was also the only one of the 3 that opened 100% of theirsnowmaking terrain. I hope they send Transue to Gore next. mm

ICE v Electric: Cost and Emissions

Some day the Russians will hack the GPS system and we'll all get lost on the way to the Shoprite and starve to death. mm

    Gore Mountain Conditions

If Gore doesn't have a water problem (which I don't know of that's true), then the only constraint is money and cold weather. They should be spending the money on snowmaking before zip lines and marginally useful lift replacements, Cold weather isn't really the problem. Belleayre and other...

That would be sweet, but at what cost? How often would it be accessible and how much water would have to be diverted from Stielhang and Rumor? mm

    Gore Mountain Conditions

What you are saying is that ORDA expanded Gore, plans to continue expanding, added XC trails that require snowmaking and traded the best terrain park for a competition venue, all without having enough water to support it all. This should all go in the "ORDA's biggest mistakes" thread. mm

    Gore Mountain Conditions

It doesn't matter what Belleayre has. Gore needs to have enough snowmaking to open on a reasonable schedule, and enough patrollers and other staff to open the whole mountain even on Mondays and Tuesdays, which Belle is able to do. Instead of spending money on projects with marginal value, like...

    Gore Mountain Conditions

No doubt snowmaking is the most difficult job on the mountain and surfaces have been very good this year, but Rumor only opened on February 16, after only 5 days of snowmaking. Why couldn't it have opened weeks ago when Lies opened? For that matter, why couldn't Lies have opened earlier...

Rumor was open. The rumor about Rumor is that patrol closed it after 30 minutes and 2 rescues. mm

    Belleayre Conditions

I don't know what the problems at Whiteface are, but they have nothing to do with Gore. At Gore, apparently ORDA expanded the footprint without actually increasing the capacity. And they're still at it with $$$$$$ for Ski Bowl when it will barely be open before mid-February unless they...

    Gore Mountain Conditions

Rumor won't open on natural snow this year, but it looks like at least a week of cold weather beginning Monday night. That should be enough to cover it. OTOH if they don't start as soon as the cold weather hits that probably means they have decided not to open it. In other news, Belleayre and...
