    Fall Weather 2024

Also snowing in Reston, VA in the DC/NoVA region apparently.

    Fall Weather 2024

Believe it or not, snowed in the NC mountains too. Meaning inches of snow, not just a trace. Sugar Mountain near Boone opened this morning. Cataloochee near Asheville will open Nov. 23. Those two always vie for "first to open" headlines.

    F Vail

If you're willing to spend 20 minutes listening, here are thoughts from Peak Rankings about Vail Resorts from a business standpoint. There are snow scenes and views of skiing in the background that are totally unrelated to the voice over. November 18, 2024

    Ticks

Not sure about that description of the color of deer ticks. Plus the color changes as they mature. Definitely smaller than dog ticks. There are pictures compared to a 1-inch ruler in this article. The ones I've dealt with were essentially too small to see a color...

    Ticks

Very important advice! Lyme disease became an issue in NC a while back, at least 15 years ago. It's no joke. I know someone who moved back to western PA around 2014 and wasn't diagnosed properly for months. He had assorted symptoms. By the time he was hospitalized, his body was severely...

    Fall Weather 2024

The guys on SkiSoutheast are very excited. Natural snow predicted for Grandfather Mountain, which means Sugar and Beech may get some too. Boone is the college town next to Appalachian. Sounds like all the NC mountains have been testing snowguns this week. The forecast overnight temperatures...

Aftermath of Hurricane Helene in the NC mountains, late fall 2024

The Asheville water system got back to normal yesterday. Water from the North Fork reservoir is being treated, "raw water" has been flushed from the entire system, and testing has been completed all over the system. So there is no longer a "boil water" situation in effect. The recent updates...

NY Ski Passport for 3rd, 4th, 5th graders

I know about other states such as Utah. Just never came across the NY Passport. Unfortunately, doesn't seem like the PA Passport will ever come back.

NY Ski Passport for 3rd, 4th, 5th graders

I didn't know there was a NY Ski Passport. Apparently expanded this year to include more locations. Fee is $45 and get 2 days for a long list, including Belleayre, Gore and Whiteface, along with Catamount, Plattekill, and Windham. Holiday Valley, Bristol, Greek, Song, Lab as well. Plus...

Belleayre / Platty MLK weekend crowds?

Make the longer drive to Plattekill. I've skied both Belle and Platty during ski safaris from North Carolina. The last time at Platty was during a Pres. Day week. Spent the long weekend skiing around the Berkshires with a friend from PA using the Indy Pass at Catamount, Berkshire East, and...

    Detachable vs Fixed Grip Lifts

Agree. The money part makes it that much easier to explain to the masses who don't pay attention to details. Who could argue with having TWO new lifts for less than the price of ONE. I gather Coach serves beginner terrain. Since Bogus has a mission to serves locals, especially local...

    Detachable vs Fixed Grip Lifts

For Bogus Basin in Idaho, the decision to install two new fixed grip quads instead of one detachable quad was fairly simple. It was a matter of money. Bogus is a non-profit. But it's not small and has been updating lifts and infrastructure steadily. Looking forward to checking out Bogus at...

The Fire and Rain and Smoke Thread

He was young, only 18. :( NY Times did an article but didn't mention a tree falling as the cause.

    Anyone use Kayak?

As an aside, there is a cheap flight on Frontier from RDU to San Diego that my husband and I were looking at the other day. He may have a professional conference to attend in 2025. Would take 12 hours just from departure time to arrival time because the routing is RDU to JFK, and then a long...

    Anyone use Kayak?

Good to know. Since I've mostly just been using the Southwest website when planning flights, never heard of Google Flights. Not the situation for RDU, which is essentially a hub for SW. I check a small suitcase and a ski bag for ski trips, so two free checked pieces make a difference. Being...

    Anyone use Kayak?

Thanks. That's useful to know. I always book direct for motels/hotels or flights. Stick with Costco Travel for car rentals most of the time. Experimented with Priceline, Expedia, and Travelocity enough when they were relatively new to know I wasn't interested in messing with a third-party.

The Fire and Rain and Smoke Thread

    Wow . . . just wow. Brush fires in NJ and NYC. November 8, 2024 https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/08/nyregion/wildfires-drought-new-jersey-connecticut.html?unlocked_article_code=1.Yk4.Wd8V.P4FbwZYNlGUr&smid=url-share November 8, 2024...

Aftermath of Hurricane Helene in the NC mountains, late fall 2024

Fall colors aren't quite over yet in North Carolina. The Blue Ridge Parkway goes right next to Asheville. Getting the road open to the Folk Art Center is a big deal. The Biltmore estate and gardens re-opened on Nov. 2. They set up for Christmas, as they usually do in late fall. Hopefully...

    Bring the Stoke

Heading back to Boston for Snowbound Expo again. The dates are Nov. 15-17. If anyone is interested, PM me for a discount code that should still be good for free tickets. What's new is that the Colorado Ski Shop (based in New England) is creating a Retail Zone. Sounds like 20% off on stuff...

    Anyone use Kayak?

Do you use Kayak when planning flights? I just discovered that Southwest is a "New Partner." I've seen ads for Kayak but never bothered to check it out before. I normally stick with Southwest since there really aren't non-stop flights from RDU to airports useful for ski trips.
