The Fire and Rain and Smoke Thread

It sounds like Blue Mountain Resort isn't in danger of the fire. However, it's going to take a while longer before the threat is over from what's being called the Gap Fire. The number of volunteer fire departments involved must be unusual. November 5, 2024...

    Belleayre Conditions

Fit in quite a bit in a 5-minute video. Adding 20 more tower-mounted and automated fan guns is a lot of fire power. Hard to know exactly when it was filmed before release on Sept. 20, 2024. Still a lot of work let on the Discovery Lodge expansion. Last time I was at Belle was when they had...

Aftermath of Hurricane Helene in the NC mountains, late fall 2024

The aftermath of a disaster is clearly different in the social media age we live in these days. The local Raleigh paper did an article about an unusual Instagram page, PhotosFromHelene. The goal is to re-unite salvaged photographs with their owners. The woman was one of the volunteers who...

The Fire and Rain and Smoke Thread

The approach to fighting the Blue Mountain fire seems quite different than what happens in the west. Or maybe it just the reporting. November 3, 2024 https://www.tnonline.com/20241103/firefighters-continue-to-battle-blue-mountain-brush-fire/

The Fire and Rain and Smoke Thread

Brush fire in PA on Blue Mountain. Started with a brush fire on Sat afternoon. Don't know the area well enough to know how close the fire is to the Blue Mountain Resort. There is a picture in the article from Sat night after dark. The last report I found this morning said the size of the...

Aftermath of Hurricane Helene in the NC mountains, late fall 2024

I'm still following the news about recovery in western NC and eastern TN. Just keeping personal notes at this point. Since there are mountain bikers around here, this video gives an idea of what's going on to get trails in the Pisgah National Forest open. November 1, 2024

    Pass-holder only weekends?

Here's what the day ticket prices look like as of Oct. 30 for February at PowMow. Certainly looks like Friday is the new Saturday.

    Sweet Cars and Trucks

Went with friends to experience a local tractor pull in central NC out in the county in the 1980s. What I remember most were the big tractors that evening. Boy was it loud! I was at the fair on Sunday with my daughter and our local teen ski buddy. They were checking out other stuff while I...

    Sweet Cars and Trucks

Happen to catch the trucks heading into the NC State Fair for the tractor/truck pull. The pickup trucks were towed in by 4-wheelers. Some with a caboose just in case. They are rolling on a single wheel in the middle so that the drive wheels stay off the ground.

The GeoModel geologist is Dr. Philip Prince. He's from Greenville, SC and grew up fascinated by the Blue Ridge Escarpment. He studied geology at Virgina Tech, was a professor there for a while, and is currently an adjunct professor. He did a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2006. At...

The Fire and Rain and Smoke Thread

Turns out that the snowguns that were set at the border of Mountain High kept spraying water even after the power went out. Gravity was enough. October 20, 2024 https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2024-10-20/how-snow-crews-saved-a-california-ski-area-from-wildfire " . . . The team had...

    Pass-holder only weekends?

Blocking Saturdays can make sense. At least for beginners and cautious intermediates. Being at a resort when it's very busy, after having paid for a relatively expensive day ticket, could mean a newbie to that resort may never want to return. Blocking Sundays as well doesn't make sense to me.

    Pass-holder only weekends?

Suppose you are a family who lives in Ogden. The kids have other activities most weekends, so they usually only go skiing a few times. With PowMow limiting all Saturdays and Sundays in February, that means no possibility of getting in a day that month. One reason Indy chose to include 2 days...

    Pass-holder only weekends?

I wonder how many season passes will be bought for 2024-25. PowMow used to limit the number of season passes. I think the numbers were 3000 season passes and 1500 day tickets. That meant no more than 4500 people on a given day and probably under 4000 people even on weekends. PowMow had over...

    Pass-holder only weekends?

Wintergreen in VA used to only sell unlimited season passes to people who owned property at the resort. Anyone else could only get a Sun-Fri pass. Buying a day ticket on Saturdays was possible. I don't know if they ever sold out post-pandemic. Ironically, that changed recently so that anyone...

    Whiteface Conditions

Yes and no. Depends on the type of skiing. But don't want to derail this Conditions thread. You can check out some of what I learned about ski conditioning after knee rehab in 2012 here: https://over50skifitness.blogspot.com/ . I was an intermediate skier with only two seasons in middle...

Aftermath of Hurricane Helene in the NC mountains, late fall 2024

Earlier I posted a video from the YouTube channel TheGeoModels that explained what causes debris flows in the Blue Ridge Escarpment. He's followed up with two videos in the past week. The first explains what happened to the Hickory Nut Gorge, where Chimney Rock is located. The debris flows...
