The skis were good. Considering the conditions, I had decent control descending. Boots are Alpinas with the binding mounts on the side.
I only went a mile up the road, concerned about getting down in one piece. Talked to guys who went to the Lake Placid turn, about 3.5 miles.
Snow coming...
First day on the Whiteface toll road. I was on nordic backcountry skis. Except for 1 snowboarder, everyone I saw was on randonee or similarly stout gear. There was a thaw, then a freeze, and someone drove a truck up the road. The road was chunky.
Fortunate to have fallen only once.
I'm not a candidate because I ski nordic, but I do have a quiver that's become borderline unwieldy. So... when you move all of these, how many pairs will you have left?
Haven't been to Viet Nam yet. Been to China twice. Trust me even though I used t5o be a salesman, you'll never complain about heat and humidity after visiting China during summer.
When I still lived in NJ, I'd find a tick on me like once every 2 years after trail running. Then, summer of 2022, it was almost every time I went into the woods, I stopped counting after 10 or 12.
@DomB thanks for the Permethrin recommendation.
Yesterday, I scoped a section of the Jackrabbit Trail in Paul Smiths. I walked south from Jones Pond Rd. Paul Smiths College maintains some of these woods for the DEC. First foto taken in an area that had seen some logging. Curious if the sign memorializes the students who worked that...
A high school friend, his family spent their summer in Saranac Lake and had property here. He moved here 30+ years ago. Did construction, built camps on Lake Placid and elsewhere. But when the market slowed down, locals got all the work and he drove a bus till the housing market picked up.

Crowdsourcing request: have you skied Big Tupper? What was the appeal? Special vibe like Platty or MRG? Something else?
For an article I hope to write for NYSB. Thank you.
Dusting of snow this morning chez moi. Cold temperatures the next 2 nights, *maybe* the Ho will begin blowing snow. Unfortunately, daytime highs still above freezing.
Today, I drove out to Big Tupper. Thought I'd run the ski trails and get a look at the lodge, see what shape it's in. Unfortunately, the end of Ski Tow Rd is gated and posted. I shoulda thought of that.
Past the golf club, parts of Ski Tow Rd have frost heaves and potholes that will loosen...
Are there enough skimo enthusiasts to support it? I have no idea how big that community is.
In the spring I tried running to the alpine hill from the xc trails. Went the wrong way on an aborted bushwhack. I might try to get back there to see what condition the lodge is in.
