Gore Mountain Conditions

25 degrees

Decided to use the new lodge to see what it is. I didn't know anyone inside.

This bench is insane. Gorgeous too. Is that real wood?

Wtf

I learned later there is one secret bathroom in the new lodge that works. There is no signage to direct you to the secret bathroom. This potentially reduces the need to pump the tank?

I walked back to the Joe Minder Lodge, as directed. All the regulars were there. They knew about the secret bathroom but still chose Joe Minder to start their day.

Backwoods

I was looking for a short day, and had no plans to go past Burnt Ridge to the North Side.

Backwoods remains very good.

Barkeater was open and @Big Dave and I did a lap in there. Easy enough to jump around the exposed rock and ice.

Had an interesting day at Gore on Friday. Drove right to Ski Bowl, which was a wise decision, as we heard that lot D was full before 9 am (when is that parking lot webcam going up?). Did some laps at Ski Bowl and worked our way up, skied all the upper mountain pods, finished up with a top to bottom run including ungroomed natural on Woodchuck, Wood Out, Pete Gay and Pipeline. It wasn’t an active decision not to ski the front side, but we never saw the main lodge all day. Can’t say that I missed it.
If you use the secret handshake I’ll tell you where the secret bathroom is.

I usually don’t eat anything at Gore but my son was hungry after a lesson. What a disaster saddle and base lodge. Hate to say it but food program was much better and efficient when center plate ran it. Absolutely terrible now and very embarrassing given what is available at other mountains

I remember a year when I didn't see the Gore base for six weeks. I like it.

Obvious it's easier if you're a weekend skier.
I actually hate and avoid weekends. You’re thinking “old” Ski Bowl rules - interconnect and Hudson chair only on weekends and holidays. Ski Bowl 2.0 is open every day except Monday and Tuesday.

Good day today. The sun being out to start was a huge benefit. Moderate crowd somewhere between a normal Saturday and a midweek day. Conditions were great all around in the morning on everything. Nice groomed edgeable hardpacked. Summit started to get skiied off in spots around noon but not bad at all. Never went down to BR or the Bowl today and stuck to the main mountain. Runs of the day were a sunny Topridge, Wild Air, Chati, and a sunny Lies early. Twister was a runner up. Runs not so great were Hawkeye and Lower Darby. Icy even early in the day. A surprise for Lower Darby but not Hawkeye.

May be up this coming weekend but looking brutally cold. McCauley looks to get blasted this week too and no real snow in the forecast for Gore or elsewhere at least as of now. May do a little detour up to the Mac instead

I decided to buy a ticket and ski Gore today between the high school races (ok, also during races after my daughter and nephew had their runs). The snow was great early, and as expected, down to glacier in spots by afternoon. It was also a lot nicer in the sun before the clouds moved in and the wind picked up.

It was a totally different Gore day for me since I repeatedly wanted to get to Twister's Little Sister to see the top part of the GS course on Echo, then down to the bottom of Echo to meet my racers. So... lots of Twister (which was a nice run today). I never went to Bear Mountain or to the summit, staying mostly on AE2 and the North Quad. During the longer break between the morning and afternoon races, I worked my way over to the Ski Bowl and back since I've never been to Gore when that was open before today. I only made a couple runs there and enjoyed them. I didn't stop in the new lodge. After the racing, I had about 30 minutes before I'd have to call it a day. I decided there was unlikely to be any great coverage left on any steeps so I just headed down Sunday and Quicksilver then over to the Sunway chair. I don't recall a moving loading conveyor at Gore before so it must be that I haven't taken that lift in its current form. I expected that to mean it was going to be pretty fast for a fixed grip but it sure wasn't.

Even with the breaks to watch the races, it ended up being my most vertical in a day so far this season, just short of 20K. Glad I decided to do it.
