Gore Mountain Conditions

I didn't ski Gore today, so I'm poking around the website. Interested in the new lodge and restaurant at the Ski Bowl. Thinking about getting some wings to go for the Bills game!

I stopped in on my way home yesterday. It's very nice. A bit modern for my taste, but I like it.

I love Gore, and generally don't complain about much. The fact that Gore is generally low key is, for me, a plus.

I started tracking Gore snowfall in 2008 because I couldn't easily follow the snow reporting.

I checked out the today's snow report at 9:20 AM.

Here's it is "Updated: 8:00 AM" showing the 4" snowfall that fell Wednesday night, as current in the last 24 hours.

This doesn't really affect me. I wake up at 6, look outside and make my decision.

But I can see how this would frustrate day trippers from the Capital District.

Didn’t stop a lot of folks from coming. It’s sold out today.

Edit:Tickets and Rentals for Sunday, 1/18 are SOLD OUT and will not be sold in person.

Sure is nice to able to do that. Pretty much what I do but with an eye on radar constantly. I live 35 minutes South of Greek and 35 minutes North of Elk, so watching the radar sometimes pays off. Not so much this season yet.

I will reply to myself.... Conditions were far better than I expected! A bit of frozen corduroy if you searched for it and one icy bald spot on Lower Sunway. Zero complaints from me I enjoyed a fine day of Lower Mountain skiing. Only struggle for me was trying to use SLOPES app. Frustrating... it would show the elevation change of the lift ride but refused to record runs! I'll try another day but it may soon find its way into the Deleted Bin! Some techie things only make life more complicated. Keep it simple.....
I’ve been using the basic free version of Ski Tracks for years. Easy to use, gives me all the stats I need.
A day of skiing looks like this when I’m done. I tried Slopes and didn’t like it either.

TLDR: Much better than I expected today. Conditions were pretty good and held up well despite a lot of traffic. It was busy but I avoided most lines by moving around.

Detailed report: Pulled in E at 8:20 after a long crawl up the access road. On lift at 8:40. First run down Showcase was excellent. Uncas was great after that followed by Lies and Hawkeye/Straightbrook liftline. All good, liftline was a little slick but manageable. McIntyre and dark side as well as Darby woods similar but edgeable. Mineshaft and an excellent Topridge before heading down to the bowl via Tahawus which was more powdery but still had a few slick spots.

Bowl was OK. Checked out the Station which is nice. My only complaint is it could be more rustic especially in the restaurant. Looks very sterile and nothing to tie it to the Adirondacks or rustic architecture synonymous with Adirondack style. No liquor license yet either but that will come. Over to BR and Abenaki was open to my surprise. Mostly decent but slick and a little thin in a couple spots. Next Barkeater which was a little better both coverage and conditions wise. Did re runs on both before another Tahawus to the base via Twister (surprisingly not icy!) around 2:45. Ended the day with another Topridge which was still in great shape and Wild Air which was skiing great with the new manmade. Called it at 3:40.

It was busy today but was manageable. Lots seemed full though no access road parking but it took almost 20 minutes to get down the road when I left which was a new one for me. Tannery was also packed when I grabbed a beer before leaving. Was not a spot to be found.

Likely back tomorrow for another round. Was thinking Whiteface but saw it was very icy yesterday and the skiing here was pretty great today and should be the same tomorrow. Really did not expect the mountain to ski as well as it did with the immature snow and freeze earlier in the week with only a few inches of new snow since but it did.

I will agree that expectations were exceeded, considering how bad things were last weekend. The new snow and repeated grooms helped a lot. Mostly skied the summit in the morning and Burnt Ridge and the Ski Bowl in the afternoon. I felt that the summit was skiing better, though it might just be because I was up there first thing in the morning. The only truly terrible trail was Eagle's Nest, which was a sheet of ice. I did 3 glades, Macintyre, Straightbrook, and Barkeater, and liked Barkeater the best. It was a very crowded day, but people did mostly spread out. Straightbrook is back to full capacity after last year's every other chair debacle, so even though it had a line for much of the day, it actually moved.

Run count as follows:

7 Straightbrook
4 Adk Express
4 High Peaks
4 Burnt Ridge
3 Gondola
3 Hudson
2 Topridge
1 North

28 runs for 31,692 vertical

Ski Bowl

25 degrees

Decided to use the new lodge to see what it is. I didn't know anyone inside.

Is this real?

This bench is insane. Gorgeous too. Is that real wood?

Oh Poop

Wtf

I learned later there is one secret bathroom in the new lodge that works. There is no signage to direct you to the secret bathroom. This potentially reduces the need to pump the tank?

I walked back to the Joe Minder Lodge, as directed. All the regulars were there. They knew about the secret bathroom but still chose Joe Minder to start their day.

Backwoods

I was looking for a short day, and had no plans to go past Burnt Ridge to the North Side.

Backwoods remains very good.

Barkeater was open and @Big Dave and I did a lap in there. Easy enough to jump around the exposed rock and ice.

Pretty good again today but definitely felt busier than yesterday. Lines built up at times on Straightbrook, Topridge, and at the base but we're never excessive really. Things got skiied off quicker today too. That said good snow to be found early on most runs. Woods were about the same as yesterday. Did get into a few new ones today I didn't hit yesterday like Forever Wild and Twister which both skiied decent. ROTD was probably Topridge in the sun around 10:30 which softened it ever so slightly. Saw Rumor was half groomed which makes sense and the whales were too big to ski and some had broken off and slid. They were still hammering it today and moved the guns to the middle to fill in the other side. Definitely will be ready by next weekend and I assume Sagamore will be by then too.

Shorter day tomorrow before heading home but should be great on the groomers with less people.
