On 10 and 11 February, I skied Mt van Hoevenberg in Lk Placid. More snow than I've seen in years, this is a banner year. And they've upped their grooming as well. Git some while you can.
Conditions at the Ho, 28 February. Everything open, though not as much snow on the ground as same time last year. Despite the new snow, there's some exposed boilerplate here and there, but you can ski around it. Overall, really good conditions.
Mount van Hoevenberg, 18 January. World Cup trails closed because Saint Lawrence Winter Carnival / Eastern Cup. Most of the 1980 trails are open. Photo is the near the top of the first hors categorie climb on Porter Mt.
As you can see, dirt is coming up here and in other places. However, considering how little snow we've had this year, skiing has been great. Been 2 years since I put in this many kilometers on the 1980 trails.
Today I encountered several associated with the race skiing backwards on some of the trails. Athletes, coaches, parents. Nearly got hit twice. On the flats it's no biggie if yer skiing both directions. On East Mountain and Porter Mountain, no bueno. Gotta respect the one way.
