Who’s on it?

Not enough snow to ski the old pasture but it’s been cold enough to freeze the swamp for skating.

The swamp is shallow so you don’t have that nightmare fuel of falling through that comes with deep or fast moving water.

I use a rotary street sweeper / squeegee to clear the ice of snow.

I brought the big boys out but they prefer a lot of space to roam.

It may not replace a day on the mountain but it gets us out of the house and into the fresh air. Besides, turns are turns right?

Just gotta squiggle it.

Cool!

My daughter and I have very clear memories (different eras) of skating on the lake on the North Country School campus. Also once or twice on Cascade Lakes.

Jealous. I miss the days when the pond next to our house had ice. Decade ago drought emptied it, growth took over. While the water is back it’s too overgrown for open ice.

Miss those days! Maybe some day we’ll make efforts to regain a patch of ice. Have fun!

My (far more athletically gifted) brother and I played hockey on the lake behind our house all winter long when we were kids. He eventually graduated to a rink and ended up with a hockey scholarship to college.

Anyway, skating around a pond is still a very evocative feeling for me. I went out this weekend and found a crew of about 15 people already on the ice. It was so magical. I felt like I was in a Bruegel painting.

A friend on Onondaga Hill with a natural wetland on his property strung up lights for pond hockey. His sons went on to play college hockey too. His mom taught an Olympian to skate. His Mother used to skate around in her tutu between periods for The Cuse’s minor league pro hockey team.

Cuse is a hockey town.
Slapshot was made here.
One of the few times I went to the State Fair The Hansons played a free concert and the hockey brothers came on stage and stole the show.
