Whiteface Conditions

Went to pick up my skis from the shop....the river parking lot was full and cars parked up the hill....more people than I would have thought. Only the summit is open...have to take facelift back down to get to lodge.

They organized the river lot different....traffic barrels and tape/rope to delineate lanes. Not the usual free for all. Can't count how many times I have seen 3 deep.

Ok so while D was working on the crack 'o' noon club schedule, I was on the early shift and got there at just after eight, and got a coveted left spot just before the bridge. Very light crowd on the lift at opening at 8:45 for the face lift (there was literally about 8-10ppl), so I actually was able to grab second chair up to the summit (which opened at 9am exactly even with Area 1 in line for chair 2). And I was so HAPPY!! Perfect cord from wall to wall on the upper big left turn on Paron's and the sun dancing at your feet! There's a little pinch by the S turns above the Follies runout, which was smooth early then got bumped later in the sun, and became the only hiccup. Once below that it was most enjoyable very firm and smooth groomer cruising back to the chair, with the complimentary Whiteface vertical go fast option!!! ⛷️ 💪 ;)

So another stellar day today! The corduroy for the first few runs this morning was such hero snow that it was so hard to comprehend with the weather that we have experienced this Fall, but a true testament of making snow at elevation! Great Job to all of the employees to have pulled off this weekend, BRAVO!! ⛷️ (y)

Current and expected snow totals from Whiteface’s instagram page. They expect to be open Fri - Sun again. 🤞🤞🤞

First day on the Whiteface toll road. I was on nordic backcountry skis. Except for 1 snowboarder, everyone I saw was on randonee or similarly stout gear. There was a thaw, then a freeze, and someone drove a truck up the road. The road was chunky.

Fortunate to have fallen only once.

Dang Peter, nice setup. How do you like the Xplores? What boots? How far did you go?

The skis were good. Considering the conditions, I had decent control descending. Boots are Alpinas with the binding mounts on the side.

I only went a mile up the road, concerned about getting down in one piece. Talked to guys who went to the Lake Placid turn, about 3.5 miles.

Snow coming down today, hopefully it'll get better.

Skiing cloudspin on Friday from the top was pretty sweet for early season…some nice boot deep snow in there too…snowed all weekend pretty much in the LP area…nice change of a ski season kickoff weekend for us, as conditions aren’t usually this good on our first time out

Getting near Decision time for me on a Friday, the 13th trip! I fear Gore will not have rebounded from the predicted rain. Maybe WFace will be a bit luckier? BUT the other concern is terrain. At Gore I ski mostly Bear Cub off the Bear Cub Quad early season. At 75 and getting back into skiing it 'fits' my early season choices. Would the terrain at WFace in the Bear Cub Den using Falcon Flyer be comparable? Worth the extra hour drive north? Or should I just stick to Gore? Or take the day off, which is seeming more likely with Friday the 13th being an omen?
