We have a ton of turkeys in our yard.
As you can see, we have those two big oaks. This year has been off the charts with acorns, and the turkeys dig the acorns.
Penny did her normal routine, ran out into the backyard and barked at the turkeys.
I guess it was too much for her.
She ran back in the house. We took her out front caused she asked to go back out. She peed and then fell over. In a minute she was gone. She was 12.
Looks like Penny had some good fun the day she passed.
Dogs teach us a lot about life in the short time they share with us.
Sorry for your family’s loss. 🙏

I believe dogs helped to domesticate humans.

Sad day but she went quickly, it is a blessing I can tell you. Maybe underlying heart condition? Dogs are stoics and mask conditions that would have humans complaining and seeing their doctors. Years ago I lost a collie, he went went from perfectly normal to dead in 48 hours due to unknown lung tumor. Vet thought it might be kennel cough, wrong. Last dog, Utah (who NYSBers may recall) lived a good life till 16.5, kidney disease finally got him. He died on the kitchen floor the day before we were going to take him in to be put down. In retrospect, that was better, we dealt with it ourselves, I dug a hole, that was that. And then you go and get another one a year later.

Very sorry to hear about Penny. I've never lost a dog to natural causes like that. She left this world happy though, that's all you can ask for.

Have you ever had to search for a runaway dog? I have a few times and last night was one of the most stressful.

Moira came home last night in a police car! Long story short, she took off after a deer when we were walking off leash outside the local dog park around 5 pm yesterday. Friends and other people joined the search on the ground, various Facebook groups were alerted and I searched the area, both on foot and by car car, until about 11 pm, with a couple of breaks. My wife is in Cuba so I had to let her know, so she could worry from a distance.

What I didn't know was that a nice person saw her sitting in the middle of the road at about 10.30, watching the cars go by, not far from the dog park. She put her on a leash that she had, knocked on a few doors, and eventually dropped her off at the nearby local OPP detachment (Ontario Provincial Police, our version of the state troopers). We connected through the dog park FB group, I contacted the OPP and a nice officer brought her home around midnight. As a parent, you would probably dread having the police bring your child home but as a pet owner it is not so bad. She was unhurt though smelled a bit swampy. Apparently Moira had a nice time at the OPP station. She had her own cell, got lots of attention, helped with paperwork and barfed on the floor. What a way to spend an evening! Here she is at the police station, picture by the woman that found her.
