The Importance (and Fun!) of a Quiver

For years, I was a fatter ski = better guy. (Which is still true in the right conditions) but for out here in the east, skis have been getting too fat lately.
I was busting Harv's chops offline about his comment that a pair of 96s are his daily drivers, including nasty hardpack. I know that there are pro-level skiers like MattChuck or MadPat who could literally make proficient turns on 2x4s, but for a hacker like me, it's all about the right tool for the conditions -- something in the 80s when there's no fresh snow, 98s and wider for proper powder. And that goes for out west as well as back east.

You may have different reasons for skiing than I do.

Look I'm sure the g-forces are a blast. Just not ready to spend on gear that best suited to icy conditions. With the limited number of days I get (35 in average normal year,) my goal is to maximize days on soft snow.

If/when I move to the mtns and start skiing 100 days that will be a different story. I'm guessing I'll ski 5 days a week.

At that point maybe I'll start to feel Coach's pain in the knees. Not feeling it now.

nasty hardpack.
I don't ski it.

I drive 3+ hours to Plattekill and 4+ hours to Gore, my two primary mountains. Would you drive that far to ski nasty hardpack?

I can sell you some hard snow skis if you want. They’re binding less too so you can set them up your way.

Since we’re friends I’ll give you a good deal

Really my only two firm ski days were at Gore over Christmas Break (12/29 and 12/30). I wouldn't call those days nasty, the skiing was good. (It was COLD AF.) The only time I really don't control my ski days is when my daughter wants to ski. That's Christmas when gymnastics is on break. And opening day if it happens on Thanksgiving weekend.

you always seem to step in it. was it last year that you caught that day at mccauley? as i recall that was quite a run you were on that winter

I'd like to ski more, but it's just not practical. I've found that my "old normal" 35 day season is about as far as I can push it with family and work.
Same....and given other commitments (family/work/soccer), forcing extra days just to be spent on snow that requires razor sharp race carvers? Not for me, anymore.....but more power to those who want it!

I just blame it all on living in Jersey. Unless you're willing to go to Mountain Creek or eastern PA mountains frequently it's near impossible to get more than 40 quality days on snow in a season living in this state.
