Imagine spending your life saving & imagining moving somewhere (maybe buying land, building a house, etc.), then the ski area that your dream is based around changes in some wild way.

What spurred this thread was this post about cost:
Just found out that the “ Gold “ pass at Big Sky will be $2300 next season. Up $300 from this season and they are not giving gold passes their own parking lot…. The corp wants less locals in the tram line. It was an hour and fifteen minutes yesterday on a powder day.
But I was also thinking of mountains that go under, mountains bought by vail, mountains changed in some other way that alters the whole reason you liked the place. Hell, maybe “climate change destroys all skiing in the east” should be a consideration for some of us.

What are your contingency plans if this happens? The above solution is easy (just suck it up & pay it), but what if the situation becomes unacceptable to you? Pack up & move? Pick a place that has a bunch of different mountains you could switch over to if one mountain gets shitty? Ski more backcountry? Do more snowmobiling & hunting (and less skiing)?

None of us have a crystal ball
Take it day by day
Play the cards you're dealt?
I couldn't look at it any other way, or I'd go nuts.

Interesting topic. I bet there are lots of Stowe skiers in this situation already.

You pay your money ya take your chances

Our friend bought a beach house for 1.5
The property next door is now a Airbnb
Parties all summer long

Fortunately most these mountains don't exist in a vacuum and have other supporting tourism infrastructure, attractions and what not to bolster the community and keep things somewhat vibrant. Buying a vacation property or full time residence in a place that is totally dependent on a single company, mountain, or otherwise is just a bad investment. Even bleak spots like Dover VT are starting to develop backcountry areas and mountain bike trails in recognition that you can't have all your chips in one basket.

Stowe is still a great community for full or part time residents regardless of how bad Vail fucks it up, Windham took note in developing recreation paths, mountain bike trails and more.
