Here at Steamboat a local told me they are over 150 positions short. COVID is not the main reason either, it's affordable housing.

Covid has been a really big part of this equation though. The wfh phenomenon since covid has really driven up rent prices in attractive mountain towns.

10 years ago I lived in a two bedroom condo within walking distance of the lifts in the Big Sky Mountain Village for $600 a month. Those days are done.

Yup. It wasn’t easy back then to get by as a ski bum but it wasn’t completely impossible like it is now.

No one wanted to build affordable housing and I don’t blame them. Land in a mountain town is way too valuable for a developer to do that but now that there’s a serious impact on these communities economic health it will hopefully be a drive to change that.

When I tried ski bumming at Smug’s they had us all in an attic somewhere.
We peed in the snow “I quit” and left just before a bunch of college kids' buses were coming in for Thanksgiving.
Went back home and got a job working 4pm to midnight.
Skied all winter when the snow was good, then went backpacking on the AT.

First place I lived in cost me zero dollars/mo. I split wood for my rent. Place was about 500 yards from the entrance of Smugg's. It was a real shithole!
You were uphill from me.
Had us do carpentry work first before folks showed up. Was supposed to do just kitchen work
(breakfast&dinner- pots & pans etc.)

They had us cleaning out the bathrooms in the husband's bar next door. Gave us discounts on drinks.
Fuck that.
