ORDA's Biggest Wins

Since we have the thread for ORDA's biggest mistakes, it's only fair to also start one about the best things ORDA has done well. This will only be chain-wide, and not resort-specific.

Buying Belleayre: Many were skeptical of ORDA expanding their geographic footprint beyond their mission statement, but it couldn't have worked out better for Belleayre and ORDA. After years of languishing under DEC ownership, Belleayre has finally hit their stride. In 10 years, ORDA has given Belleayre a gondola, a new quad, a new lodge, and has more than doubled their snowmaking capacity. It worked. What was once a third rate ski area that the DEC had to give away access to, is now pulling record revenue. It's also mutually beneficial to Gore and Whiteface, as ORDA's Ski 3 pass product is much more competitive than when it was just Gore and Whiteface.

Keeping Lift Ticket Prices Reasonable: Let's face it. Skiing is ridiculously expensive, especially if you don't have a mega pass. But if you don't have a mega pass, you can ski at the ORDA mountains without totally breaking the bank. They also discount tickets pretty deeply midweek and early and late season. This keeps skiing more affordable to a wider demographic, at a lower commitment.

Automated Snowmaking: All 3 ORDA mountains have invested in automated or semi-automated snowmaking technology, to allow for more efficient utilization, even without an increase in actual snowmaking capacity.

Terrain Expansions: Snowmaking problems aside, ORDA has added more terrain in the past 20 years than almost anyone, and that in itself is enough for this list.

Preservation of Olympic Venues: Ever heard of Olympic venues languishing after the games leave? Not in Lake Placid. ORDA has done an excellent job preserving them, and continuing to utilize them to this day. Not many Olympic host cities can say that.

Anyone else have anything to add?

Most of those things were managed by ORDA but decisions came from above.

ORDA didn't buy Belleayre, the state decided to have them manage it. I agree that if they are all going to be managed by the state, they should be together. I think the SKI3 is much more valuable with Belle on it.

The terrain additions were also done "above" ORDA. But I like them too.

Agree on lift ticket prices. Reasonable is certainly relative.

Revenue not reported in the Annual Report since 18/19:

Unfortunately, ORDA's annual report has become increasingly opaque. A shame as they're doing a great job running the venues.

I agree on lift ticket prices especially if you buy them early. I got a two day ticket for the beginning of February back just before Christmas for $65 a day for Gore. I had my daughter check and see how much they were to make sure I was doing it right. I could t believe I got them for that price

Scoring the wug was one of the biggest wins in orda's history.
Really?
What are their success criteria? Is it spectator attendance? At Gore it looked like all the spectators were the WUG volunteers and there were fewer paying skiers than normal. It’s like WUG drove them away. Also they made a boatload of snow on trail that was never open to the public until mid February. How much did that delay opening Rumor, Burnt Ridge and the Ski Bowl?

The report is increasingly opaque because despite the recent millions spent on the venues, the venues continue to be the money losers they have been since ORDA was created in 1981. ORDA might know how to run the venues, but they do not have to answer and never had to answer for the yearly losses at the venues.

It is not even all ORDA's fault. It is impossible to make money at most of the venues and the venues are expensive to operate, maintain, and update. The fault lies with those in Lake Placid who think these venues should continue to operate with NYS funding. There should have been an effort during the last 40 years to somehow transfer the venues and the funding to the Federal govt, but then the local power brokers would not been able control the money and what happens in Lake Placid.
