Are the days of letting people know you're coming up on either up on left or right side gone? I know a lot of people ride with headphone these days, but I really try to let people know I am coming up on them but I rarely hear it.

I've been skiing for only about 17 years and the first and only place I saw it with regularity was the two days I skied at Killington 2013. I thought it's a brilliant idea and I've mostly done it since that day on narrower trails. Generally have found people to respond positively to it. Unfortunately almost no one doesn't it at Bristol Mountain (my home mountain) which is too crowded anyway.

As for music, i do listen with outdoor tech chips in my Smith helmet. But since they are over the ear i can hear extremely well around me. I know some people using ear buds that block external sounds, which is crazy to me.

This drives me nuts ... As my forum name implies, I do most of my skiing at Whiteface, and I've found that generally speaking, people are pretty respectful about not getting too close, and when they do, you'll often get a call out. There are, of course, exceptions to this.

I had the good fortune to have booked a trip to Utah for last week, and skied Snowbird & Alta last Thursday, Friday & Saturday. The snow was incredible ... probably the best three days of skiing (in a row) I've ever experienced.

What I couldn't believe was how incredibly reckless people were. I've never been so concerned about getting taken out as I was during this trip. A friend I was with actually did get taken out ... A guy skied into him from behind at full speed. Fortunately, no one got hurt, and the guy apologized, but my friend's ski sustained some damage. In another incident, I had stopped to wait for some people and a guy skied right across the tails of my skis. There were lots of other cases where people came so close to each other, with no warnings ... How hard is it to let someone know you're coming by???

Face, didya see the powder daze over rated thread?
Folks used PTSD and altatude as descriptors.
Glad ya had a good time and made it back with minimal damage.

It makes me angry just to hear "on your riight," as if I'm supposed to get out of some gaper's way. The worst hit I ever got happened that way. Know the code. Hang back and pass safely. It's not that hard.

mm
it isn't for you to get out of the way, it is so when I am coming to pass you say on a flat cat track and have carried more speed to avoid having to skate you dont make a sudden turn in front of me. It shouldn't be used when someone is bombing down a run, that is uphill skiers responsibility.

This.

For the record, my record is clean except for that time I was hit at Mount Snow in 89 or 90, after I was knocked down from a skier that hit me from behind I slid into a ski patroller who fell over on top of me breaking my nose. He then yelled at me for being out of control and unfortunately my bell was rung so hard I didn’t defend myself. I’ve been hit now 5 or 6 times.
