I don't think I like Loon.

It skis like a cross between Stratton and Okemo. Everything gets groomed, and it's mostly blue-green terrain. That ridiculous Kanc8 lift is pointless. It only goes halfway up a relatively small mountain, and rarely gets filled, even with a large crowd.

Am I missing something?

Cannon looks more my speed, I'll definitely hit that next year with Indy.

Just driving around the mountains after I succumbed to boredom at Loon, everyone seems to be out skinning the chutes of the Whites, which are many.

Yes, everything gets groomed, but it's not like Stratton and Okemo. There are some trails that have significant pitch to them. The North Peak and Lincoln Express lifts serve around 1500 vertical each. Stratton and Okemo don't really have anything even the pitch of Victoria at Whiteface or Bunny Buster at Killington, which are both rated blue.

The Kanc 8 goes to the top of the pod it serves, which is West Basin. Same as the lift it replaced. It does have significantly higher throughput than the quad, though it would be improved if they directed the line like they're supposed to.

You seem to have missed their steepest terrain.

I've never been there, but it looks good.

I agree with sno….There definitely is more challenging terrain at Loon than at Okemo. But weekends are a zoo of Massholes.

Loon also has some surprisingly good tree skiing/sidecountry (quality and quantity) over on Black Mountain, off the side of Walking Boss.

Hunter used to be my home mountain, so I guess I'm used to that kind of skiing. When I went to Loon last month, I went in with that expectation, that it would be like Hunter, since it serves the same market but Boston instead of NYC.

Replying to myself here because I just realized that the sidecountry tour over to Black Mountain at Loon reminds me of pre-lift access Burnt Ridge at Gore. A small schlep to
access lots of hardwood shots and work your way back to the lift at the base.

As per my report a few weeks ago
My daughter and I planned on skiing cannon. Unfortunately it was blowing 50mph. Loon was dead calm and it was mid week. It was a easy cruising hill. Just what I needed. The 8 pack was ski on so I found it a cool lift.
Skiing there on the weekend lol

Regular Whiteface/Gore skiers will feel at home at Cannon. Slightly spartan, state run, lots of history, quirky af, arctic winds, steeps, ice. All the stuff hardcore eastern skiers love.
QFT !
