Hickory may be back soon

Great news, hope it happens, what an awesome place. Only skied it once, 18", rock skis useful. Can't say that about most hills. That's the major glitch too with no snowmaking. Place made Plattekill seem like Aspen. It was a trip skiing in the 50's.

Hey, Saddleback was resurrected. Another great mountain. Hope to get back there someday.

I saw this a few days ago, and chose not to post it.

Read the article closely. It seems like there are some on the town board who are skeptical.

I hate to be skeptical, but... I am skeptical.

I sincerely hope I am wrong.

Yep. I think for all of these Hickory/Big Tupper/etc. stories, the attitude should be “I’ll believe it when I see it”

Unfortunately these areas should probably bail on the ski thingy and concentrate on activities that don’t rely on snow. Unless major investments are made that will never see a return, it’s pretty much a pipe dream. Unless of course people are content with being open 5 weekends a year like the Mt. Greylock Ski Club.

To clarify I meant for skiing, from the top. Lessons off the Tbar and a stop for snowmobiles could work.

BVP4 has run the numbers and shared them with me. His plan was elaborate and expensive, and he decide it just didn't make any sense. You don't get to where he is in life by taking big changes with a lot of money.

The Hudson River is about 1000 feet from the entrance to Hickory and there have always been rumors about pulling water from the Hudson. If that was approved, they might have a chance to be in business as a 1200 foot vertical ski area.

It was “approved”, it is the lack of beginner and intermediate terrain that would justify the cost of snowmaking infrastructure that is holding it up.

Two years ago we were granted access to hike around the base and check out the lodge. Super creepy sad to see everything frozen in time. It seemed to be in a 50/50 state which IMO means a reimagination is usually in order. Hiking, biking, camping, concerts, weddings, zip lines, leaf peeping, haunted hayrides, paintball... lots of other activities to entertain that could breathe life back into the place that could generate income and maybe justify the cost of skiing again. I hope something happens, cool place. Never got to ski there, but I love seeing photos and hearing the stories.

I hope there’s some use for that property, but lift served skiing isn’t in the cards. Since the 90s, it’s been open between zero and 22 days a year. That just doesn’t justify the commitment they would need to make to run a lift. Adding snowmaking would destroy everything that made that place unique and fun.
