ADIRONDACKS – Two skiers survived a weekend avalanche on Wright Mountain in the Adirondacks, officials said.

One skier self-rescued on the Essex County peak, then that skier helped the other skier out, officials said.

No significant injuries were reported.

Two skiers were initially buried. One then got out, then dug out the other, officials said.

Both skiers had proper safety gear, including shovels, beacons and transceivers, officials said. The two had also practiced rescue techniques. The skiers’ cities of residence were not available.

Rangers are investigating the potential cause and/or conditions that led to the avalanche, officials said.

Backcountry skiers, snowboarders, and other users who may traverse slides or steep, open terrain should use extreme caution and be aware of and prepared for avalanche conditions, officials said.

The DEC received the report of a human-triggered avalanche on a slide located on Wright Mountain Saturday, officials said.

So a warm, wet slide?

They are very lucky. It doesn’t look like the slides in the Daks have much clean run outs and they look littered with obstacles. It’s trauma city.

Gotta have that alpine start if it’s going to get warm and if it barely freezes at night or doesn’t at all, just stay home.

A buddy of mine skied Avy Pass this morning. He said the slide looked huge. They were ascending when the avalanche occurred. Staying apart and wearing helmets is rarely done on the up. If you here a whumpf it’s time boogie, hard to do with skins on. Apparently the guy who rescued his friend had only practiced using a transceiver once before and that was at Marcy Dam just before the incident. Very lucky to be alive.
