Blue Mountain, PA, Sold

Keep in mind that KSL Capital Partners and KSL Resorts are pretty distinct as companies. There was a lot of confusion back when KSL Resorts became the operator of Camelback because people heard "KSL" and assumed that meant Camelback would then be added to Ikon. That did not happen.

Wonder if there will be a joint pass for Camelback and Blue? Or at least a few days at the other resort as a perk for season pass holders. That idea has worked out well for Wintergreen in VA and Wisp in MD, which both draw from the DC/NoVA metropolitan area. Those two resorts are operated by the same company.

I get the impression that the current owners of Blue figured out a way to work with KSL Capital to get funding for what they want to do to develop some of the property.

BMR Resort traces to KSL Capital Partners, a Denver private-equity firm that focuses on investments within hospitality, recreation, clubs, real estate and travel services. KSL Capital is affiliated with KSL Resorts, which operates Camelback Resort in the Poconos and confirmed in May that it would manage Blue Mountain.

What wasn’t clear until the deed became public was whether KSL was taking an ownership interest in Blue Mountain.
A KSL Resorts spokesperson confirmed Monday that BMR Resort is the company formed to buy the land, buildings and assets of Tuthill Corp., the prior operator of Blue Mountain.

Blue Mountain President and CEO Barbara Green, who took over the resort in 2007 from her father, founder Ray Tuthill, “remains as an owner” of BMR Resort and continues as CEO.

A couple of years ago Vail made several site visits to BlueMountain with the intent to acquire it. The deal was all but done, and then they announce the purchase of peak resorts. That killed the BlueMountain deal.

Given the changes that happened for the former Snowtime resorts (Liberty, Roundtop, Whitetail), not having VR the owner for Blue may well be better in the long run. In general, the locals on DCSki are pretty annoyed at how things changed after VR bought Peak.
